My YouTube video last week was about building your own celebrity status to grow your business, but that’s not the only way to benefit from celebrities.
It’s also very helpful to be associated with celebrities, even if it’s a very shallow association, like a brief meeting at an event.
And there’s a very good reason for this.
Humans have been fascinated with famous people since the dawn of our social existence. Long ago, it aided in survival to get close to leaders and to imitate them.
That hasn’t really changed much, it’s just a lot easier to be seen doing it now.
Celebrities have a certain status that’s been bestowed upon them by society, usually for doing great works of some sort and being recognized for them in broadcast media.
In the case of this photo, Jake Jabs is the founder of American Furniture Warehouse, a VERY successful retail furniture store. But that’s not what made him famous.
There are lots of furniture stores out there, but we have no idea who founded those. So why do we know Jake Jabs?
Mainly because he’s the star of his commercials, and secondarily, because he’s very active in the local entrepreneurial community here in Denver.
In a way, he made his own celebrity status just like I discuss in my YouTube video.
Back to why it’s beneficial to be associated with celebrities…. Celebrities come with a level of trust that’s completely a result of their fame.
We “feel” like we know them, because we see them on TV or hear them on the radio or read about them in the newspaper.
In most cases, we like them (at least a little) based on what we see, hear and read. So if a picture is taken of Jake Jabs standing next to me, some of that trust we have with him is subconsciously transferred onto me. It’s a tacit endorsement.
In addition to that benefit, being seen with a celebrity says something about us. It says we’re out-and-about; we’re up-and-coming; we’re hanging with the who’s-who.
In a way, some of their celebrity status rubs off on us, just because we’re seen standing next to them.
As I discussed in last week’s YouTube video, it’s highly beneficial to be viewed as a celebrity. It can lead to more customers and increased sales.
Therefore, since being seen with celebrities increases our own celebrity status, they can also help us get new customers and increase sales.
My advice to you is to get out there! Go to events where celebrities will be. Hang around after the event and talk to them.
Then ask if you can have a picture taken with them. Without the picture, it’s like saying you have a girlfriend in the vicinity of Niagara Falls…no one will believe you.
Then go home and shamelessly share your celebrity photos on your website, newsletter and social media feeds…just like I’m doing now. 😉
