Some of you may know that I’m in the process of launching the “Keynote” part of my new path in life. I’ve been teaching my web startup workshop for almost a year, and now it’s time to start encouraging more people to chase their entrepreneurial dreams.
It goes without saying that In order to give a keynote speech, one must have a keynote speech, so that’s what I’ve been working on lately.
Since I’m new to the keynoter world, I’ve been doing exactly what I tell new web entrepreneurs to do: learn from people who know more than I do.
One person in particular has helped me a lot! His name is Darren LaCroix and in 2001, he won the Toastmasters World Championship of Public Speaking with his motivational speech, “Ouch.”
Last week, I had a rare opportunity to see Darren share his knowledge at a local Toastmasters event along with another World Champion of Public Speaking, Ed Tate.
It was an eyeopening experience. In the span of 3 hours, these two men completely changed my view of public speaking. They taught me about the most important “must haves” in a keynote, and the most important “must avoids” in a keynote. And guess what….
My keynote was missing many of the “must haves” and it had several of the “must avoids.” I went straight home after the event and at 10 o’clock at night, I started rewriting my keynote.
Darren and Ed not only saved me a lot of time, they also greatly improved my keynote and my chance of success with it.
If you’re starting down a new path in life and you’re finally chasing your dream, you might think it’s easier or cheaper to figure it out on your own. But trust me, it’s not.
If you’re truly serious about learning something new, find someone, ANYONE, who knows more than you and learn from them. Ask them for help. Read their books. Attend their training classes.
You don’t have to go it alone! Find a teacher today!
