My daughter’s room was a disaster. She (we) hadn’t cleaned it in a very long time. If you’ve ever watched an episode of Hoarders, you have a visual of what it looked like. But Sunday was the day to stage an intervention and put an end to the “circling vortex of entropy,” to quote Sheldon from Big Bang Theory.
Sydney took the intervention like a trooper and did a great job of helping with the clean-out process. Once we uncovered a path to her bed, as a reward for her hard work, I volunteered to undertake the under-bed cleaning. Thinking I deserved hazard pay for such a treacherous task, I dove in.
After a few minutes of torture in the Pit of Despair under her bed, much to my surprise…I discovered my long-lost iPod! What a find and a great reward for MY hard work!
Later that night, I decided to listen to a playlist on my old iPod and one of the songs that randomly played was “Stop and Stare” by One Republic. I’ve heard that song a dozen times or more and I really liked it when it was first released, but it never “spoke” to me until last night. Has that ever happened to you? Have you ever listened to a song over and over with little impact, but then one day, it all makes sense?
I meet a lot of people who are in the process of starting a business and I often hear complaints about lack of progress. They’re working hard, but they’re not getting anywhere. Or, some people are afraid to take a risk and start their own business..they’re scared of failing. As a result, the dreams they had when they were younger have fallen by the wayside and they’ve become what they didn’t want to be..stuck in a job they hate.
To quote lyrics from the song: “I think I’m moving but I go nowhere. Yeah I know that everyone gets scared. But I’ve become what I can’t be.” Sound familiar?
The song isn’t a happy one. It’s about wanting more from life and going for it (“Untie the weight bags. I never thought I could.”), but giving up before you get it (“Something pulls my focus out and I’m standing down.”).
Lack of focus is the killer of dreams, but it doesn’t have to be that way. You can get the focus you need to be successful by feeding the most powerful force you have at your disposal: your belief in yourself.
If you doubt yourself or your abilities, that’s normal. But you don’t want to be normal, do you? You deserve to be exceptional!
Doubt and fear are a choice! You can let them control you, or you can choose to put them in their place!
CHOOSE the life you lead! Don’t let it choose you! Don’t “Stop and Stare”!
