Last week, Patrick and I met with two people who own a non-profit. They were interested in our marketing help.
It was easy to see how passionate they were about helping people with their very worthy cause. It was NOT easy to see how they were going to generate revenue from it.
The term “non-profit” doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t earn revenue. It only means you have to spend all of it on your cause. On helping people, animals, the environment, or whatever you care so much about that you started a non-profit to support it.
We live in a capitalist world and it takes money to make a difference in it. You may not like it, but that’s the way the system works so if you want to have any sort of positive impact, you need to know how to work the system in your favor.
And the better you are at working the system, the more impact you can have. If you can help 10 people with a thousand dollars, you’ll be able to help a thousand people with a hundred thousand dollars…maybe more with economies of scale.
Whether you run a non-profit or a for-profit business, it’s still a business and businesses need to earn revenue to keep the doors open. There’s no shame in that. You’re not evil for accepting their currency for your value.
With a non-profit, the value you provide needs to be for people who can support your cause since the people or things you want to help are often the beneficiaries of the revenue you generate instead of those providing it.
It’s a bit easier for us profit-oriented businesses because we provide value directly to the people who can afford to pay us.
Either way, you’re providing value in exchange for a different kind of value (currency or barter) and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. In fact, it’s a pretty efficient system we’ve created and it works quite well if you accept it, or even better, embrace it.
Money is not the root of all evil because you can use it to fight evil very effectively, but only if you have enough of it.
You’re already passionate about your cause or your business. Now, figure out how to generate enough revenue so you can make a massive difference.
Tell us what you think.
