Do you like talking to your friends? Do you like posting witty updates to your social media profiles? Do your friends like talking to you and reading your witty updates?
Then why do you WRITE like a MACHINE?!
This is a big mistake a lot of people make when they write blog posts or other content for their website or business. They write in a way that would make their 11th grade English teacher blush with pride, but it makes their average reader hit the back button or the delete button.
Fogetabout writing textbook content! Write in your own voice! Let YOUR personality shine through!
Wanna know how to do it? Keep your pants on…I’m gettin’ there!
Here are 3 tips to help you write content that sings:
1) Write like you speak. Don’t worry about using perfect textbook grammar and spelling. That doesn’t mean poorly written content is ok. It needs to be well written, but it doesn’t need to make your high school English teacher proud.
You can start sentences with “and” and you can end sentences with prepositions if it sounds right. This technique will make you sound like a real person that your readers can connect with (or should it be, with which your readers can connect? Yuk.)
2) Use your humor. “Everybody thinks they have good taste and a sense of humor but they couldn’t possibly all have good taste.” ~Marie in “When Harry Met Sally.”
Everyone has a sense of humor. Even if yours is an acquired taste, use it in your writing. You might get some eye rolls, but who cares! You won’t be there to see ’em!
3) Write to your best friend. When you’re pounding the keys, type like you’re talking to your best friend. Picture that person in your head. Imagine them smiling and laughing at your goofy jokes and puns.
It sounds silly, but it really works! If you want to get a real laugh (or at least a puzzled look) from your friend next time you see them, talk to them like you’re reading a boring dissertation.
How will they respond to that? Probably with a, “what the hell’s the matter with you?” Yet that’s how most people write content for their website and business. It’s boring! Don’t do it!
Just be real!
If you want your readers to connect with you on a deeper level, you can’t treat them like you’re talking to a cop who just pulled you over for speeding. TALK to them like a real person when you’re writing to them.
